Val Di Sole in Italy, the host venue for the 2008 world champs, saw an full field of the worlds best riders. With just over a month to go before the championships everybody was keen to perform and gauge themselves against the clock.
The upper portion of the track has been used for various other events over the past 3 years, including the European champs in 2005 and 2006, However with the addition of the new lower section the track can now be described as one of the most technical on the circuit.
The Subaru mountainbike pro team was fully represented by Fabien, Damien and Florent, work started on Thursday afternoon by walking the track and planning the strategy. The goal of podium finished was going to be hard to achieve and being smooth and in control was imperative.

The diversity of the mondraker kaiser was put to the test as the riders went through the training on Friday and Saturday, continually changing and improving the bikes function and speed.
Fortunately the athletes did not have the weather to contend with and 3 days of sunshine helped keep the motivation up.
Sunday was race day, the riders started in true world championships format being placed by nation and rank. The first round proved to be difficult for all the riders due to the intensity of the track, Florent and Damien showed they have what it takes to be on the team and Fabien had an easy run with a few small mistakes. There was no pressure due to an all riders qualify, seeding run.
The afternoon started to threaten with a few rain spots as the riders headed up for the final. A good preparation paid off for the team!
Damien Spagnolo did not find the form he had shown in the previous 3 races of the season and battled with his smoothness, this lead to a few mistakes which counted against him on the scoreboard, with the worlds best riders hungry for top places there was no room for error and he slid down to 20th place. He was not overly disappointed by his result because he knows where he went wrong and what to do to correct.
Florent Payet was the surprise finisher of the day, he really put his technical skills to work on this coarse and flew down, even after bouncing off a tree at the top he managed to muscle his way to 4th place shutting the door on many of the other teams hopes.
Fabien, after 3 weeks off the bike showed his experience and skill yet again by controlling his race perfectly, he knew that there was no place for errors on the track and he also knew that he would not be able to push the limit as much as he would like due to his current form so decided to play it safe and work on optimising his average speed. All this paid off and he managed to edge ahead of Florent into 3rd place.
This, is an amazing result for the new team, filling 2 places of the podium!
Next week first world cup, Maribor .

Le spectateur présent à Val di Sole en Italie au pré-Championnat du Monde 2008, a pu admirer les meilleurs riders du monde en action.
Un mois avant le championnat, tout le monde avait envie d’évaluer ses performances et de se mesurer au chrono.
La portion supérieure de la piste a été le théâtre de différents événements pendant les trois dernières années dont le Championnat Européen en 2005 et 2006.
Maintenant, avec l’ajout de la nouvelle portion inférieure, la piste est devenue l’une des plus techniques de tout le circuit.
La Subaru MTB Pro Team était représentée par Fabien, Damien et Florent, qui ont dès jeudi après midi commencé à s’échauffer en reconnaissant le terrain et en mettant en place une stratégie.
Finir sur le podium fut une tâche difficile ; le contrôle de soi et le calme furent déterminant. Les capacités du Mondraker Kaiser furent mise à l’épreuve tout comme les pilotes pendant les test de vendredi et samedi.
Heureusement le beau temps était au rendez vous ; 3 jours de soleil furent bénéfiques au moral et à la motivation des participants.
Dimanche, le jour de la compétition, les athlètes attaquèrent un véritable Championnat du monde en étant classifiés par catégories et nationalités.
La première manche fut difficile pour tous. Florent et Damien ont bien mérité leur place au sein de l’équipe. Fabien, malgré quelques petites erreurs, fit une belle descente.
L’après-midi de préparation pour la finale se déroula sous une petite pluie ; un bon test pour l’équipe ! Damien Spagnolo ne retrouva pas la forme de ses 3 précédentes courses de la saison ; ses quelques petites erreurs face aux plus gros riders mondiaux joueront contre lui dans le classement final. Il terminera en 20eme position. Cependant, Damien n’est pas découragé par sa prestation, il sait où sont ses erreurs et que faire pour y remédier. Florent Payet créa la surprise en terminant 4eme. Après avoir percuté un arbre il prendra quand même la 4eme place, en enlevant définitivement tout espoir aux autres équipes.
Fabien , privé pendant 3 semaines de son vélo , démontra une fois encore son aptitude et son expérience en maîtrisant parfaitement son run. Sachant que les erreurs n’étaient pas envisageables sur cette piste et que son état physique ne lui permettrait pas de donner son maximum sur cette session, il décida de jouer la carte de la sécurité en conservant un vitesse raisonnable. Cette décision porta ses fruits en le plaçant en 3eme place devant Florent Payet.
La 2eme place du podium pour cette nouvelle équipe reste un résultat surprenant.
La semaine prochaine, 1ere coupe du monde à Maribor.
