Fabien Barel takes the win of the second round of the French national series by a large margin over Michael Pascal.

The SUBARU Pro MTB team raced the second round of the French cup last weekend, Fabien Barel, Florent Payet and Damien Spagnolo were faced with yet another rain soaked track when they arrived for Friday’s course inspection. The storm continued all day Friday and the afternoon training had to be cancelled due to the extreme conditions.

Saturday brought some sunshine and the opportunity for the riders to practice the track, it was long and technical so a good rhythm without too much aggression would be important. The track dried up during the day, this made the rock slab sections very slick as the mud stuck to them. By the end of the training the riders were feeling confident and they all had a good pace.

Race-Day saw similar conditions, with sun in the morning and a mid-day storm, however it had rained on Saturday night so the first run of the day was very difficult.
The riders prepared well for the first run and despite of the changing conditions were confident.

Damien has some bad luck as he hit his pedal on one of the rocky sections which sent him over the bars, bending them in the process. For Florent it was not a perfect run either as he found himself a little off the pace in 5th place.
Fabien rode really well and finished in first place, 4 seconds up on 2nd place.

For the final the rain stayed away and the track became faster, the riders knew they would have to push harder and take more risk if they wanted to finish on the podium.
For Damien, it was not his weekend as during his run he hit one of the ski poles which locked his front brake and took him down, he lost a few seconds but was able to recover and have a good run finishing in 5th place.
Florent had some of the same bad luck, hitting his pedal hard as he left the start gate and bending the axle, he could not clip in and was not able to pedal due to his ankle hitting on the swing-arm with each revolution, however he focussed on carrying his speed and managed to battle the pain of his injured ankle to a 6th place finish.

Fabien was on form after 2 weeks of riding he had regained some of the skills he was lacking for the early part of the season. He was ready to push hard for a good result leading into the Australian world cup.
He did just that, rode aggressively and confidently to take the victory with a convincing margin.

Another good weekend for the team and an important confidence boost for Fabien, he departs for the 6th world cup in Australia on Thursday and Damien and Florent head for the 3rd French cup in Montgenevre next weekend.

Fabien Barel a largement remporté le deuxième round du championnat national devant Michael Pascal.

Encore une fois, le SUBARU MTB Pro Team a dû faire face à une piste détrempée lors de son repérage de vendredi. L’orage continua tout le vendredi et l’entraînement de l’après-midi fut annulé à cause des conditions extrêmes.

Le soleil revint le samedi ce qui permit aux riders de s’entraîner. La piste, longue et technique, devra être négociée sans trop d’agressivité. La piste sécha ce qui rendit les rochers très lisses à cause de la boue collée dessus. A la fin de la journée, les coureurs étaient très confiants.

Le jour de la course, les conditions étaient assez similaires avec du soleil le matin et de l’orage l’après-midi. Mais avec la pluie de la nuit, les premiers départs allaient être très difficiles. Malgré toutes ces conditions, les riders étaient prêts à en découdre.

Damien fut malchanceux lorsqu’il percuta un rocher avec sa pédale ce qui le projeta par-dessus le cintre, le tordant au passage. Florent ne fit pas un run parfait, bien qu’il finit en 5ième place.
Fabien fit une très belle descente en finissant en première place, à 4 secondes du deuxième.

La pluie cessa pour la finale ce qui rendit la piste plus rapide, les riders savaient qu’ils devraient tout donner et prendre tous les risques pour finir sur le podium. Ce n’était pas la semaine de Damien puisqu’il heurta une porte, son frein avant se bloqua, il chuta, et perdit quelques secondes qu’il réussit finalement à rattraper pour finir son run en 5ème place.
Florent manqua lui aussi de chance, puisqu’il frappa violament sa pédale dès le départ et tordit l’axe. Malgré l’impossibilité de clipser sa chaussure et de pédaler correctement, il se concentra sur sa vitesse et décida d’aller au delà de ce désarroi pour finir finalement à la 6ème place.

Fabien était en forme après 2 semaines de course et il retrouva le niveau qui lui manquait pour le début de la saison. Il était prêt à travailler dur pour obtenir un bon résultat qui le mènerait à la Coupe du monde australienne.
Il s’est donc donné à fond, pilotant avec agressivité et confiance et assura sa victoire avec une avance certaine.

Un autre bon week-end pour l’équipe et un important élan de confiance pour Fabien qui part pour la 6ème Coupe du monde en Australie jeudi. Damien et Florent, quant à eux, prennent le départ pour la 3ème Coupe de France à Montgenèvre le week-end prochain.

Damien Spagnolo marked his best ever world cup result last weekend for the Subaru Mountian Bike Pro Team.

The team travelled straight from Mt St Anne to Bromont on Monday with the intention of spending some time riding and resting in preparation for the race.
Walking the track was on Wednesday and as was the case the week before it was very wet. The track looked challenging and the riders were keen to get some early practice to build confidence before it deteriorated.

Practice went well for the team but the weather conditions were extreme! A major storm delayed the training and caused the closure of a large drop at the top of the track, fortunately all the rain did not dampen the spirits of the riders as they enjoyed riding the track.

Due to the rocky nature of the course Fabien, Florent and Damien decided to use dry tyres, so only some suspension modifications were needed to get the bikes ready for race day.

The qualifying went really well for Fabien, he decided to push hard and take risks hoping to score good points. He managed 3rd place but was not happy with his run as he made some big mistakes that lost him a few seconds, he knew he could do better in the final. Damien had an average run also making some mistakes and qualified mid-pack knowing he would have to focus if he was to pull off a good final. For Florent, luck was not on his side and he had a crash that put him way down in the results, however he did qualify for the final.

The final was much better for Florent as he managed to have a clean safe run, however he lacked confidence and decided to ride safe, he also had to contend with a brief rain storm which made the track very slippery. He was not too disappointed with his result as he had not found form on the track and did not want to push beyond his limits, so he was happy to have controlled his race run.
Damien was very confident and focused at the start and seemed like he had passed a big step in his preparation that allowed him to control his aggression and ride a smooth fast final, he crossed the line with a great time and took the hot seat. This was the first time in his career where he enjoyed the feeling of being one of the fastest racers in the world.
Fabien Barel was 3rd last rider down and the he knew he could have a good result, he was riding well, feeling strong and above all regaining confidence after a difficult season plagued with injury. He took a powerful start and was flying down the first section of the track, he landed the first big drop and felt his back tyre wash out, he knew it was not just loss of grip but something much worse, a rear puncture! Fabien was devastated as he realised that he had missed the opportunity for a great result. Although he did not cross the line with a good time he was happy with his riding throughout the weekend and feels he is now back on pace.

More good news is that the the team moves up to 2nd place in the overall ranking!

Leaving North America, the entire team was happy to have had the opportunity to spend 10 days together building the spirit and enjoying all aspects of the sport and lifestyle, back to France for French cups 2 and 3 and then Australia…..

Damien Spagnolo réalise son meilleur résultat de Coupe du monde ce week end pour le Subaru MTB Pro Team.

La team a voyagé de Mt. St. Anne à Bromont lundi avec l’intention de passer du temps à rider et à se préparer pour la course.
Mercredi, ils parcoururent le circuit et, comme ce fut le cas la semaine d’avant, il était très humide. Il semblait être un challenge et les pilotes étaient chauds pour commencer l’entraînement tôt afin de gagner de l’assurance avant que celui-ci ne soit détérioré.

Les exercices se déroulèrent bien pour la team mais les conditions météorologiques furent extrêmes ! Un violent orage retarda l’entraînement et causa la fermeture d’un large drop en haut du circuit.

Dû à la nature rocailleuse du terrain, Fabien, Florent et Damien décidèrent d’utiliser des pneus secs, ainsi seulement quelques modifications sur la suspension ont été faites pour que les vélos soient prêts.

Les qualifications se sont bien déroulées pour Fabien, il décida de mettre le paquet et prit quelques risques espérant marquer de bons points. Il finit à la 3ème. place mais ne fut pas content de ce circuit car il fit quelques grosses fautes qui lui causèrent la perte de quelques secondes, il savait qu’il pouvait faire mieux. Damien fit une course moyenne, faisant aussi quelques fautes et se qualifia vers le milieu des places, sachant qu’il devrait se concentrer s’il espérait un bon résultat final. Pour Florent, la chance ne fut pas de son côté, il eut un accident qui le fit perdre beaucoup de places mais cependant il se qualifia pour la finale.

La finale se déroula beaucoup mieux pour Florent qu’il opta pour une conduite propre, cependant par manque de confiance, il décide de piloter avec sécurité et il eut aussi à affronter un petit orage qui rendit le circuit très glissant. Il ne fut pas déçu de ses résultats vu qu’il n’était pas trop en forme et qu’il avait décidé de ne pas aller au delà de ses limites, donc il fut content d’avoir maîtrisé ce circuit.
Damien fut très confiant et se concentra sur la grille de départ. Il semblait avoir sauté un grand pas dans la préparation qui l’autorisa à contrôler son agressivité et à piloter une finale régulière et rapide, il passa l’arrivée avec un très bon temps et prit la meilleure place. Ce fut la première fois dans sa carrière où il sentit la joie d’être l’un des plus rapides pilotes dans le monde.
Fabien Barel fut le 3ème. des derniers pilotes à se lancer et il sut qu’il obtiendrait de bons résultats, il pilota bien, se sentant au point et fort, regagnant toute la confiance après une saison difficile assailli de blessures. Il prit un départ fulgurant et s’envola dans la première section, atterrit après le premier grand drop et sentit son pneu arrière s’affaisser, il sut que ce ne fut pas une simple perte d’adhérence mais quelque chose de beaucoup plus grave, une crevaison arrière !
Fabien fut anéanti et il réalise qu’il manqua l’opportunité de réaliser de très bons résultats. Bien qu’il ne traversa pas la ligne d’arrivée avec un bon temps, il fut content de courir tout le week-end et sut qu’il était à présent de retour avec allure.

Plus de bonnes nouvelles : le team monta à la 2nd. place dans le classement générale !

Quittant l’Amérique du Nord, l’équipe entière fut heureuse d’avoir eu l’opportunité de construire un esprit durant ces 10 jours ensemble et goûta à tous les aspects du sport et de la vie. De retour en France pour les Coupes de France 2 et 3 puis ensuite l’Australie…

First world cup podium for the Subaru Mountainbike pro team. After a very challenging weekend Fabien Barel took home 5th Place!

The team arrived on Wednesday afternoon, just in time to walk the track and discover the condition of the track, it was very wet and rough due to the heavy rains. More rain was predicted so the riders opted to start training on intermediate tyres. Thursday’s training went well even though the riders were struggling with the conditions and punctures they managed to find some good lines and speed.
Florent Payet had a massive crash stopping his training after the 3rd descent. He needed treatment for his injuries but fortunately nothing serious, he had to miss the training on Friday due to this.

Damien Spagnolo was coping well with the conditions and again increasing his skills and speed as he has done throughout the season so far. Fabien was still suffering from his foot injury which put him out of the French National champs the week before but it was getting better daily so he too was confident that he could pull out a good race.

Saturday was the first morning of sunshine and the track dried quickly, it became rougher and faster which played into the hands of Fabien. The semi final went well for him and he finished in 6th Place. For Damien it was not as good, he had a crash and damaged his bike causing him to have to freewheel to the line. Florent was still suffering from his injuries so decided to take an easy run. Fortunately both riders qualified for the final.

By the afternoon the clouds again started to form, putting doubt in the riders minds for tyre choice. Damien was first down for the team and was having a really good run until disaster struck for him, he punctured the rear wheel and had to roll down to the finish. He was really disappointed because he was on top form and on line for another top 20 result, his split time echoed this however it was not to be!
Florent took a calm but powerful start and set a good pace all the way down riding conservatively on the really rough sections to conserve his energy and battle the pain from his injuries. He continued his pace until the last few hundred meters, he punctured just before the finish but was able to cross the line with a semi-flat tyre not loosing too much time.

By the time of Fabien’s start the air had cooled and sky darkened, but this time no rain until the podium. Fabien’s run went well, he hit all his lines and carried speed where he needed to, being precise on a track of this level is very difficult so he decided to ride a little more with feeling and it paid off. He knew he would battle physically on this track after his recent injuries but he managed to push the pain boundaries and fight the lactic acid to arrive at the finish line and take the hot seat, with 5 riders to come down the mountain he was not sure of the podium. As the clock ticked he saw that his time was going to be good enough to keep 5th Place and his first world cup podium this year. (4th Place Maribor, but due to a rule change only 3 riders were called to the podium.)

Despite the punctures and injuries the team are proud to be able to deliver the results week after week, continually learning and improving. Next stop Bromont WC no.6.

Premier podium de Coupe du Monde pour le Subaru Mountainbike Pro Team. Après un week-end très chaud, Fabien Barel a pris la 5ème place !

Le team est arrivé sur le site mercredi après-midi, juste à temps pour parcourir à pied la piste et en reconnaître les conditions, c’était très humide et dur à cause des fortes pluies. De nouvelles chutes de pluie étaient annoncées donc les pilotes choisirent de commencer l’entraînement avec des pneus intermédiaires. L’entraînement de jeudi se passa bien. Même si les riders durent lutter avec les conditions et les crevasses, ils arrivèrent à trouver quelques bonnes trajectoires et de bonnes vitesses.

Florent Payet fut victime d’une grosse chute et dû stopper son entraînement après la troisième descente. Il avait besoin de soins pour ses blessures, mais heureusement rien de grave. Ça l’obligeât tout de même à louper l’entraînement de Vendredi.

Damien Spagnolo s’en sortait bien avec les conditions et augmentant encore sa maîtrise et sa vitesse comme il le fait régulièrement depuis le début de la saison.

Fabien souffrait toujours de sa blessure au pied qui l’avait mis hors-jeu des Championnats de France la semaine précédente, mais, il se sentait mieux chaque jour donc lui aussi était confiant sur ses capacités en course.

Samedi fut le premier matin ensoleillé et la piste sécha rapidement, elle devint plus dure et plus roulante, ce qui a joué entre les mains de Fabien. La demi-finale se passa bien pour lui et il finit sixième. Pour Damien, ce ne fut pas aussi bénéfique, il chuta et endommagea son vélo, l’obligeant en devoir rejoindre la ligne en roue libre. Florent souffrait toujours de ses blessures donc il décida de jouer la sécurité. Heureusement, les deux pilotes se qualifièrent tout de même pour la finale.

En cours d’après-midi, les nuages commencèrent à se reformer, faisant hésiter les pilotes sur leur choix de pneus. Damien était le premier du team à descendre et faisait une course magnifique jusqu’à ce que le désastre s’abatte sur lui : il creva de la roue arrière et du finir comme ça jusqu’à la ligne. Il était complètement dégoûté parce qu’il se sentait au top de la forme et parti pour figurer une nouvelle fois dans le top 20, son temps en était la preuve, toutefois ce ne fut pas le cas !
Florent pris un départ calme mais puissant, donnant le bon rythme tout au long de la descente, pilotant économiquement sur les sections les plus dures pour conserver son énergie et luttant pour dominer ses douleurs. Il conserva son rythme jusqu’aux dernières centaines de mètres et… creva juste avant l’arrivée. Il réussit à franchir la ligne avec un pneu à moitié à plat sans perdre un temps trop important.

Au moment du départ de Fabien, l’air s’était rafraîchi et le ciel assombri, mais il ne plus pas jusqu’au podium. La course de Fabien se passa bien, il négocia toutes ses lignes et relança parfaitement là ou s’était nécessaire. Être précis sur un tracé de ce niveau est extrêmement difficile donc il décida de piloter un peu plus au feeling et ça s’est avéré payant ! Il savait qu’il aurait à lutter physiquement sur cette piste après ses récentes blessures mais il réussit à passer outre ses retours de douleur, combattit l’acide lactique pour atteindre la ligne et prendre une position dominante. Avec 5 pilotes restant à partir, il n’était pas encore certain du podium. En voyant les temps s’afficher, il sut qu’il serait de toute façon au moins en cinquième position et donc sur son premier podium de Coupe du Monde cette année (il avait fait quatrième à Maribor, mais à cause d’un changement de règles, seuls 3 pilotes furent appelés sur le podium).

Malgré les crevaisons et les blessures, le team est fier de continuer à aligner les résultats semaines après semaines, apprenant et progressant en permanence… prochaine étape Bromont – Coupe du Monde N°6.

Another awesome weekend for the SUBARU mountain bike Pro team, despite the misfortune of Fabien Barel, 3rd and 4th Place were sealed by the team.

The ski resort of Serre-Chevalier was the venue for the 2008 French national champs. This year the level of French talent was very high and there were 6 riders capable of winning the championship. With a great track and good weather the training went well until the last session of Friday when Fabien collided with a slower rider who had opted to take an alternate route around one of the large obstacles on the track. The other rider re-entered the main line of the track and stopped, just at the landing of the jump. Fabien tried to avoid him but at speed it was not possible so he ended up hitting his ankle on the frame of the stationary rider. Fabien could not walk after the incident due to the injury so after a scan at the hospital he was relieved to find that there was no major damage. The swelling of the incident cased his ankle to be immobile for a few days and hence he was not able to participate.

Florent Payet, fresh off his European championship victory was confident and keen to show that he is one of the fastest riders in France. He too fell prey to some misfortune in the form of a severe stomach illness that put him in bed for 2 days, he missed Saturday’s training but with the help of his team he was able to find the motivation to slowly descend the seeding run, this was imperative if he was to race on Sunday.

For Damien Spagnolo everything went well and he picked up his pace as the weekend progressed, he was enjoying the track and riding within his limits which delivered a 5th place in the seeding run.

After a week of sunshine, the rain finally arrived on Sunday turning the track to mud, the mechanics quickly changed the bike settings and training went well. Florent was feeling weak from his sickness but motivated. Damien was confident and had a good pace.

With French national TV there to film the downhill the run of Florent was the first to be broadcast. He stayed in the hot-seat for almost an hour, until the last 2 riders down managed to beat his time. He rode really well considering his physical state and managed to concentrate on lines that were comfortable to ride and conserving maximum energy. Damien also rode really well despite the severe conditions when he took the start, heavy rain and a soaked track did not slow him down, he managed a clean run showing that he is on the pace and in control of his riding this season. Damien finished in 4th place, just behind Florent.

The team will now travel to North America for 2 world cups so look out for some more great results…

Encore un super week-end pour le SUBARU MTB Pro Team, malgré le manque de chance de Fabien Barel, avec ses 3ième et 4ième places de décrochées.

La station de ski de Serre-Chevalier vient d’accueillir le championnat de France. Cette année, le niveau des coureurs français était très élevé, avec pas moins de 6 riders capables de remporter le championnat. Grâce à un merveilleux temps et une très bonne piste, l’entraînement se déroula bien jusqu’à la dernière session de Vendredi où Fabien percuta un autre rider plus lent. Celui-ci contournait l’un des gros obstacles sur la piste et s’arrêta juste au niveau de l’atterrissage de ce saut. Fabien essaya de l’éviter mais avec sa vitesse, c’était impossible. Sa cheville percuta le cadre de l’autre vélo. Fabien, ne pouvant plus marcher, fut amené à l’hôpital pour faire des examens. Heureusement, on ne décela pas de graves dommages, mais sa cheville fut immobilisée pour quelques jours. Fin de la course pour Fabien

Florent Payet, fort de sa dernière victoire au championnat européen, était confiant et prêt à montrer qu’il était l’un des descendeurs les plus rapides de France. Mais, de sévères maux d’estomac le clouèrent au lit pendant 2 jours, ratant ainsi l’entraînement de Samedi. Avec l’aide de ses co-équipiers, il retrouva néanmoins le courage et la motivation de faire quelques descentes, ce qui était impératif pour réussir la course du lendemain.

Tout se passa bien pour Damien Spagnolo. Il aimait bien cette piste, la dévalant à toute allure et finit 5ième au classement provisoire.

Après une semaine de beau temps, la pluie finalement arriva le Dimanche, transformant la piste en une bonne gadoue. Les mécaniciens transformèrent les vélos et tout se passa bien. Florent se sentait faible mais motivé. Damien, était confiant et dans un bon jour.

Avec les caméras françaises pour filmer l’événement, Florent était le premier à prendre le départ. Il resta en première place pendant près d’une heure jusqu’à ce que les 2 derniers riders prennent sa place. Malgré son état physique, il fit une belle descente en se focalisant sur des trajectoires douces et confortables et en économisant son énergie. Damien fit également une bonne descente malgré les conditions désastreuses de la piste en début de parcours. Néanmoins, la pluie et le sol détrempé ne l’arrêtèrent pas, montrant ainsi ses capacités de contrôle et de pilotage. Damien finit en 4ième place juste derrière Florent.

Le team va maintenant partir pour l’Amérique du Nord pour les 2 courses du championnat du monde alors, attendez-vous à de bons résultats !

July 13 2008, The Subaru Mountain bike pro team took Top honours filling the first 2 places of the podium.
Florent Payet is now the European downhill champion and his teammate Damien Spagnolo took 2nd place.

After 2 days of torrential rain the track was soaked and the conditions very difficult, just making to the finish was a huge task. The first days training went well despite a few punctures the riders settled into the rhythm and started to pick up speed.
Saturday was the seeding run and the goal was to finish with strong runs to build the overall speed and confidence on the track.
Fabien Barel displayed his skills by finishing 13sec ahead of second place and his team mate Damien finished 4th despite a crash meters from the finish line.

Sunday saw the conditions worse and a long delay in the morning due storms causing the lifts to be closed, finally it was decided that the riders would be allowed on training run each and that the track length would be reduced, due to the risk of lightning on the top of the mountain.
Florent was the first man down for the Subaru team and he marked an awesome run smashing the time and posing himself firmly in the hot seat, as the rest of the nations tried to beat his time he sat nervously watching the scoreboard..
Next it was the turn of Damien to try and better the time, he had an aggressive start and unclipped both pedals losing some time, but he managed to recover really well and ride a smooth fast run, so fast that he managed to go into second place.
Fabien was the last man down and he knew it would be hard to beat his team-mate’s time so he tried to push really hard in the first section, he was not expecting the deterioration of the track to be so severe and he found himself way off line in the first section, he tried to control it, but in the conditions, the smallest mistake turned to disaster, he crashed and lost valuable time. He was not able to recover the lost seconds so could not complete the 1, 2, 3 on the podium.

After the race the time celebrated as this was an amazing achievement, showing that the strengths of the 3 riders are coming together to deliver the results. Both Florent and Damien can be commended by there achievements and Fabien was honoured to see them on the podium.

Le 13 juillet 2008, le Subaru Mountain Bike Pro team rafle tous les honneurs en prenant les deux plus hautes marches du podium.

Florent Payet est maintenant le Champion d’Europe de descente et son coéquipier Damien Spagnolo a pris la deuxième place.

Après deux jours de pluies torrentielles, la piste était trempée et les conditions vraiment dures, atteindre l’arrivée était déjà une lourde tâche. Les premiers jours d’entraînement se sont bien passés malgré quelques crevaisons, les pilotes ont pris leur rythme et commencé à trouver la vitesse.
Samedi c’était le semi run et le but était de finir avec de grosses rotations pour construire la vitesse globale et la confiance sur la piste.
Fabien Barel afficha ses qualités en finissant 13 secondes devant le second et son coéquipier Damien finit 4ème malgré un accident à quelques mètres de la ligne d’arrivée.

Dimanche a vu les conditions empirer et un long retard s’est déclaré le matin à cause des orages qui empêchaient le bon fonctionnement des remontées. Finalement, il a été décidé que les pilotes seraient autorisés à des training run individuels et que la piste serait réduite en raison des risques de foudre sur les sommets.

Florent fut le premier du team Subaru à descendre et marqua un superbe run en explosant le temps et se positionnant fermement. Tandis que les autres nations tentaient de battre son temps, il resta assis nerveusement à scruter le tableau de scores.
Puis ce fut le tour de Damien de tenter d’améliorer le temps. Un départ agressif mais les deux pédales non clipées lui firent perdre un peu de temps. Malgré tout il se rattrapa vraiment bien et couru un rapide run tout en souplesse, si rapide qu’il lui ouvrit la deuxième place.
Fabien fut le dernier à descendre et il savait qu’il serait difficile de battre son coéquipier, alors il tenta de mettre vraiment le paquet sur la première section. Mais il n’avait pas envisagé que la piste serait aussi détériorée et il s’est retrouvé off line. Il a taché de reprendre le contrôle mais dans de telles conditions, la plus petite des méprises tourne au désastre, il est tombé et a perdu un temps précieux. Il était impossible de récupérer la seconde perdue pour faire un triplé Subaru sur le podium…

Après la course, vint le temps de la célébration de ce beau succès. Succès de groupe, montrant combien les 3 pilotes œuvrent ensemble pour le résultat final du groupe. Florent et Damien pouvaient être salués pour leurs résultats et Fabien était heureux et flatté de les voir sur le podium.

This was the first round of the French Cup Downhill, held in the French ski resort of Les Orres. The close proximity of 2 cities and the high level of competition brought many spectators to this event.
Unfortunately Florent Payet could not attend the race as he is still recovering from his wrist injury sustained in the world champs.
Friday was the first day of training and the conditions were difficult, the track was very new and the ground was constantly drying after some heavy rain on Thursday evening, however with over 400 riders of all levels the lines quickly appeared. The training went well for Fabien and Damien and although they were battling to find a smooth rhythm on the track they both felt confident that the speed was good.

Saturday’s training was much shorter and the riders focussed on making the correct set-up changes on the bikes and finalising the lines for the race. The weather had stayed hot and dry for 2 days but the forecast was for heavy storms on Sunday so tyre choice was going to be a big factor!

Sunday morning quickly changed from bright blue skies at 7am to a heavy thunderstorm at 9am, which stopped the ski lift from running due to the lightning. The track was soaked but by 10am the sun was out again and drying the track… Fabien and Damien were not to take the start until well after 13h00 so they decided to watch trackside to make the choices for the first run. The clouds were forming again so they decided to go for the intermediate tyres at the last minute and hence lost some time on the warm-up.
For Damien the run went really well and he was able to control his attack and speed to come down in third place.
Fabien did not have such a great run, he made lots of mistakes and was not 100% focussed, however he was pleased that he was riding some parts really well and managed a 2nd place behind Mick Pascal.

Before the final, there were 2 more large storms, and the track had deteriorated, so the tyre choice changed again and this time it was full mud tyres.
This pace was a little slower than the morning but the conditions much worse. Damien really pushed hard for the final as he knew he was capable of a good place, however he made a tiny mistake which caused him to wash out on both wheels and go down, sliding off the track! Unfortunately for him he lost a lot of time ended up 14th.

Fabien’s race run was much like the morning, he lacked the concentration he needed to avoid making mistakes. He did manage to ride some sections really well and was pleased with his speed. He said after his run that he found lots of positive points from the weekend even though there was no victory he felt satisfied with his riding speed and knows he can put down the focus when he needs to.

So overall a good weekend for the team and a good step in the lead up to the European and French National champs to be held over the next 2 weeks.

Le premier tour de la Coupe de France de DH se déroula dans la station de ski des Orres. La proximité des deux villes et le haut niveau de compétition ameuta beaucoup de spectateurs pour cet événement.
Malheureusement, Florent Payet n’a pas pu participer à la course, étant en convalescence de sa blessure au poignet lors des championnats du monde.
Le premier jour d’entrainement se déroula Vendredi et les conditions étaient difficiles, la piste étant vierge et le sol complêtement trempé après les fortes pluies de Jeudi soir. Mais, avec le passage des 400 riders, la piste se dessina rapidement. L’entrainement se passa bien pour Fabien et Damien et même s’ils bataillaient pour trouver le bon rythme, tous deux étaient satisfaits de leur vitesse.

L’entrainement de Samedi était beaucoup plus court. Les riders se focalisaient plus sur les derniers réglages. Le temps était chaud et sec depuis 2 jours mais les prévisions annonçaient de gros orages pour Dimanche. Le choix des pneus allait être un facteur décisif !

Le Dimanche matin changea rapidement d’un beau ciel bleu à 7 heures du matin pour un violent orage à 9 heures, ce qui empêcha les remontées mécaniques de fonctionner à cause des éclairs. La piste était trempée mais le soleil réapparu vers 10 heures. Fabien et Damien ne devaient pas prendre le départ avant 13 heures. Ils décidèrent d’attendre et d’observer la course afin de faire le meilleur choix de pneu pour le premier run. Les nuages recommençant à se former, ils optèrent à la dernière minute pour des pneus intermédiaires et perdirent un peu de temps lors du warm-up.
La descente se déroula très bien pour Damien. Il contrôla parfaitement son attaque et sa vitesse et finit en troisième place.

Quant à Fabien, il fit pas mal de fautes et n’était pas concentré à 100%. Il descendit pourtant avec brio quelques portions et réussit à décrocher une deuxième place derrière Mick Pascal.

2 nouveaux orages passèrent juste avant la final. La piste s’était transformée en un vrai champ de bataille. On changea une nouvelle fois les pneus pour des “spécial boue”.
Ce tour était un peu plus lent mais les conditions étaient bien pires. Damien, consciant de son potentiel, mit le paquet pour cette final. Mais, à cause d’une petite erreur, il dérapa des deux roues ce qui lui fit perdre pas mal de temps. Il finit quatorzième.

Fabien manquait encore de concentration pour cette descente et fit quelques erreurs. Avec quelques sections bien gérées, il était assez content de sa vitesse. Il annonça après la course que ce week-end avait eu beaucoup de points positifs même s’il n’y avait pas eu de victoires à la clé.
Globalement, c’était un bon week-end pour la team et un bon tremplin pour le championnat européen et le championnat national français qui se déroulera dans 2 semaines.

The subaru MTB Pro Team was this week-end at the inauguration of the Auron Bike Festival. On a huge area, 12 tracks for all skills were put in place with 3 chairlifts. For this emblematic Alpes Maritimes resort, Summer 08 is based on taking contacts with the activity, in order to develop widely in 2009 and 2010.

The particularity of this area is a big altitude difference (650 metre for the first section and 750 metre for the second) but also a very diversified massif.
More than 700 riders were with us at this event. It was a huge success, supported by the conseil général des Alpes Maritimes and organised by the UCC.

C’est à Auron que le SUBARU MTB Pro team s’est retrouvé pour l’inauguration de l’AURON Bike Park. Sur un vaste domaine, 12 tracés de tous niveaux ont été mis en place pour la joie de tous avec 3 remontées mécaniques à disposition.

L’été 2008 est basé sur une prise de contact avec l’activité pour cette station emblématique des Alpes Maritimes, dans le but d’un développement plus large sur 2009 et 2010. La particularité du domaine est un large dénivelé (650 mètres pour la première section et 750 mètres pour la deuxième) mais surtout un massif montagneux très divers. Plus de 700 pratiquants, nous ont rejoint pour cet événement à grand succès soutenu par le conseil général des Alpes Maritimes et organisé par l’UCC.
