The training started with bright blue skies and a dry track but after Fridays practice the scene was set to change, with torrential rain predicted the riders were not sure how the already technical and fast track would evolve, but for the Damien and Fabien one thing was clear, they would give it all no matter what.

Damien Spagnolo showed he was riding well after he posted the second fasted timed run, this helped him regain some of his lost confidence from the first part of the season and also helped motivate his team-mate Fabien. After a very wet start on Saturday morning the training was cancelled and the qualification postponed to Sunday – making a tight schedule and no room for uncertainty.

Sunday arrived and as promised the sun was out, training was difficult as the track was still soaked but drying quickly. Damien was the first down for the team and he posted a good time even though he rode conservatively. For Fabien it was a slightly different story, he had some mechanical issues at the start which cost him some time and then rode slightly off form, he was not satisfied with his run but pleased when he saw his position of 13th.

After a few hours the final started and a tough choice had to be made – wet or dry tyres, the track was constantly drying but would it be dry enough? The riders decided to stick with wet tyres and concentrate on exploiting the good points in the technical sections.
Damien had an awesome run, only 3 days after switching to the new ZERO suspension prototype he confirmed that it works by placing 18th.
Fabien was confident in the start, hoping for a podium finish however he knew it would not be easy on such a technical track. He started powerfully, hitting all the right lines and saw that he was back on form, by the halfway mark he was flying making it look easy and he decided to let the brakes go and see what happened, for sure it all happened for him, he posted an amazing time that no other rider could match and stayed firmly seated in the hot seat right to the end.

An amazing comeback for Fabien and his first world cup win for his own team gave him and immense satisfaction which was added to by performance of his team mate Damien securing his first top 20 for the season.
Overall an exceptional weekend for the team and the start of good things to come !

Fabien Barel victorieux à Maribor ! Le SUBARU MTB Pro Team s’adjuge la première place.

Après deux jours d’incertitude, un brutal changement de temps et sa blessure au genou qui le faisait souffrir, Fabien nous a montré comment on gagne malgré tout une coupe du monde : détermination, confiance et surtout enthousiasme !

L’entraînement, qui avait débuté sous un ciel bleu et avec une piste sèche, a commencé à changer après les séances de vendredi avec des prévisions de pluies torrentielles. Les coureurs ne savaient plus comme allait évoluer cette piste technique et rapide. Pour Damien et Fabien, une chose était pourtant claire : ils allaient tout donner, peu importe les conditions.

Damien Spagnolo allait montrer qu’il avait la forme pour piloter après s’être octroyé le deuxième run le plus rapide. Pour lui, c’était un bon moyen de retrouver confiance après un début de saison moralement difficile et bien sûr, c’était aussi bon pour le moral de son co-équipier Fabien.
Samedi matin, après un départ plus qu’humide, l’entraînement est annulé et les qualifications décalées à Dimanche, chargeant bien le programme et ne laissant plus de place à l’incertitude.

Dimanche arrive avec, comme prévu, le retour du soleil. L’entraînement est dur, la piste est encore trempée mais sèche rapidement. Damien est le premier du team à descendre et réalise un bon temps même s’il pilote prudemment. Pour Fabien, c’est un toute autre histoire : il démarre avec des soucis mécaniques ce qui lui coûte un peu de temps, puis pilote en dessous de ses capacités. Il n’est pas satisfait de son run mais est plutôt content quand il découvre sa position de treizième.

Après quelques heures, c’est le début de la finale et un choix difficile reste à faire : pneus pour terrain humide ou sec ? La piste séchait régulièrement mais serait-elle assez sèche ? Les pilotes font leur choix : ce sera des pneus terrain humide et se concentre sur les parties techniques pour en tirer le meilleur parti.
Damien fait un run impressionnant, seulement trois jours après avoir installé le nouveau proto suspension ZERO, il confirme que tout marche bien en se plaçant 18ème.
Au départ Fabien est confiant, espérant un podium au final même s’il a conscience des difficultés sur cette piste très technique. Il démarre à bloc, dévorant les lignes droites et sentant qu’il avait retrouvé la forme. A mi-parcours, il volait… parfaitement à l’aise, il décide de lâcher les freins et voir ce qui allait se passer… et pour sur, ça s’est bien passé : il réalise un temps magnifique sur lequel aucun autre pilote ne peut rivaliser. Il reste fermement installé sur son siège de vainqueur jusqu’à la fin.

Un fabuleux retour pour Fabien, sa première coupe du Monde gagnée avec son propre team lui procure une immense satisfaction, renforcée en cela par la performance de son co-équipier Damien, réalisant son premier top20 de la saison.

Sous tous les aspects donc, un week-end exceptionnel pour le team et le point de départ de plein de bonnes choses à venir !

Fabien Barel showed last weekend that he is well on schedule with his recovery by his amazing performance in Scotland.

It was just 2 years ago that Fabien suffered a similar challenge on the same track, the challenge to come back and race after a serious injury. As in 2007 where he finished 2nd in the world championships he can be pleased with his performance.

The training was difficult for Fabien , firstly due to his knee injury causing him to fatigue after more than 2 min of downhill and secondly due to the limited training hours for him. Being placed out of the top 80 ranking in the world cup he was not entitled to the additional training hours. The bike setup had to be finalised on the first day so that he could concentrate on line choice and raising his riding speed to match world cup level.

On the other hand, the training went really well for Damien who was able to quickly settle into his lines and obtain a good pace. The qualifying went well for Damien and he was able to place 32nd, he was motivated for the final and knew he could ride faster. Fabien did not have a good qualifying round as he made some mistakes on the upper part of the track, which cost him some time.
For Damien the race run was going well and he was feeling really confident, hitting all his lines and carrying good speed, however it all suddenly went wrong as he felt his front wheel slide out from under him on one of the turns. He went down and broke his front brake lever so was unable to continue riding. Fortunately for him he was not injured.

Fabien showed his experience by his consistent, fast top section passing the first split within the top five, however he started to feel that he would not be able to keep up the pace all the way to the final due to his physical condition, so he controlled his run conserving the maximum energy by riding smoothly. He entered the pedalling section feeling really tired and knew he was not going to be able to push as he had done 2 years ago, however he knew that he had already ridden the top section well so managed to keep his motivation right to the finish line, giving it his all.
He crossed the line in top spot and stayed in the hot seat for 25min before he was beaten, with the knowledge that only 14 of the worlds best were able to beat his time he was pleased to back racing and confident that soon he will be back on top.

Fabien BAREL vient de nous montrer que son rétablissement est en bonne voie avec cette très belle performance en Ecosse.

Il y a tout juste 2 ans, Fabien subissait le même challenge sur cette piste, celui de faire son “come-back” et de rouler avec une sérieuse blessure. Comme en 2007 où il finit 2ème de la course, il peut être fier de sa nouvelle performance.

L’entrainement était difficile pour Fabien. A cause de sa blessure qui l’épuisait au bout de 2 minutes de descente mais aussi parce qu’il n’avait pas beaucoup de temps pour s’entrainer. Etant hors du TOP 80 de la coupe du monde, il ne pouvait pas profiter des heures supplémentaires d’entrainement. Les réglages du bike devaient être finis le premier jour pour que Fabien puisse se concentrer sur les trajectoires et la prise de vitesse.

D’un autre côté, l’entrainement se passa très bien pour Damien qui a su prendre rapidement ses marques et fit de bons chronos. Il finit en 32ème place des qualifications et était prêt à tout arracher pour la finale. Fabien ne fit pas un très bon run de qualification, avec quelques fautes sur le début de la piste lui faisant perdre du temps.

Le jour de la course, tout allait bien pour Damien. Très confiant, il assura toutes ses trajectoires avec une bonne vitesse. Mais tout à coup, sa roue avant glissa dans un virage, le faisant tomber et cassa son levier de frein avant. La course était finie pour lui mais heureusement il n’était pas blessé.
Fabien montra toute son expérience sur cette course, franchissant le début de la piste avec une bonne vitesse et fut dans le Top 5 au premier “check-up”. Mais il sentait qu’il ne pouvait pas maintenir l’allure jusqu’à la fin, alors il économisa un maximum d’énergie en roulant proprement. Il entra très fatigué dans la section de pédalage et savait qu’il ne pouvait pas pousser aussi fort qu’il y a deux ans. Mais avec le run qu’il venait de faire, il savait qu’il devait garder sa hargne pour le finish. Il franchit la ligne en première place et resta sur le podium pendant 25 minutes avant d’être battu, seulement 14 des meilleurs pilotes ont été capables de le surpasser. Rien de tel pour être motivé !!!

Fabien Barel proves his recovery is going well by a podium finish in the first round of the French national series.

The small French ski resort of Lac Blanc, neighbouring the world cup venue of La Bresse was host to the first round of the SUBARU National downhill series. Damien Spagnolo and Fabien Barel were excited to get on their bikes after walking the track and seeing that it would be an interesting course to race. The track was short but filled with technical sections and loose dusty turns.

The first days practice went well despite the record number of entries of 430, the organisation ensured that things ran smoothly and no time was lost by the riders. The bright sunshine and dry conditions helped draw spectators with an estimated 5000 the track was lined from top to bottom.

Race day was a little cloudy and the riders started to be concerned that there could be rain storms in the afternoon. The first run did not go well for Damien as he had a mechanical problem right out the start gate (a broken chain), this left him freewheeling to a respectable 23rd place.
For Fabien it was much better news, he was able to ride well within his limits and hitting all his lines, he suffered in the lower part of the track as he could not develop the power needed to pedal hard to the line. He was pleased to finish in 2nd place behind Michael Pascal.
The final round was going to be tough for both of the rider as Damien knew he had to push hard to get into the top 5 and Fabien was still suffering from leg pain due to the restrictions of his knee braces. For Damien the run went much better as he was able to pick up his pace through the run and end up with a good time, unfortunately for him his conservative top section cost him some valuable seconds putting him in 12th place.Fabien was able to pull out another solid run with only slight mistakes he kept up a good average speed and almost same time as the mornings run. He again suffered from the restrictions of the knee braces and found it difficult to push hard on the pedalling without the risk of being too tired for the technical bottom section, so he decided to go for the safe option, this cost his 1 place but with a high level and close times he was happy with his progression.

After the race Fabien commented that he was really happy to be back on the bike but a little frustrated to not be able to push in his race runs as much as he is used to, he also said that he needs to be patient and continue with all the steps for a full recovery.

Overall a good weekend for the team in front of the large crowd, and an essential step for Fabien. The will stay to ride in the bike park and then head off to the next world cup in Fort William later in the week.

Despite some pain in his legs due to the knee braces he was able to ride consistently all weekend and continue with his preparations for his return to world cup racing.

Fabien BAREL nous prouve que son rétablissement se passe bien en montant sur le podium de cette première manche du championnat français.

La première manche de la coupe de France de DH s’est déroulée dans la petite station de ski du Lac Blanc, tout près de la manche de coupe du monde de La Bresse. Damien SPAGNOLO et Fabien BAREL, après avoir fait les reco de la piste, était très excités d’enfourcher leurs bikes. La piste était très intéressante, avec beaucoup de passages techniques.

Le premier jour d’entrainement se passa bien, malgré un nombre record de 430 passages. L’organisation a assuré qu’il n’y a pas eu de temps d’attente pour les riders. Le soleil et le beau temps attira près de 5000 spectateurs sur le bord de la piste.

Les nuages arrivèrent le jour de la course et les pilotes craingnaient un risque d’orage dans l’après-midi. Damien eu un ennui mécanique pour son premier run. Il cassa sa chaîne juste après le départ et du finir la course en roue libre, mais avec une respectable 23ème place à l’arrivée. Fabien fit bien mieux, bien que son genou ne lui permettait pas de développer assez de puissance dans les pédalages, et finit en 2ème place juste derrière Michael Pascal.

Le dernier passage allait être très exigeant pour les deux pilotes. Damien devait repousser ses limites pour atteindre le TOP 5 et Fabien souffrait à cause des contraintes de sa genouillère. Le run se passa bien mieux pour Damien, finissant avec un bon temps. Mais à cause d’un départ un peu trop prudent, il ne finit qu’à la 12ème place.
Fabien fut capable de sortir un autre très bon run, avec seulement quelques erreurs et un temps similaire au premier. Sa genouillère le faisait toujours souffrir et il ne pouvait pas trop forcer sur le pédalage de peur de se mettre dans le rouge pour les parties techniques. Mais l’option de la sécurité lui fit perdre une place.

Après, la course, Fabien avoua être très content d’être de retour dans la course mais un peu frustré de ne pas pouvoir aller au maximum de ses capacités. Il devait être patient et continuer petit à petit à récupérer.

Un assez bon week-end pour la team et un pas essentiel pour Fabien. Prochain objectif : La coupe du monde de Fort William la semaine prochaine.

Barel is back !

Great news for the SUBARU mountainbike pro team is that Fabien Barel is back in action and on top of the podium.

The team travelled to the regional downhill hosted by team partner, Roubion. Damien Spagnolo made the trip down to the south of France to get some more time on the bike in a “no-pressure” environment and to ride with his team-mate Fabien. The riders were greeted with perfect weather and a great track and a full field of almost 300 riders.

The training went well for the team and eventhough Fabien was not 100% comfortable riding downhill with an extra 1.2kg’s worth of knee braces he felt good on the bike and realised that his recovery goals are realistic. Damien was also enjoying the track but struggling with the conditions. The extremely dry hard pack track riddled with holes and dusty turns was proving to be a challenge for a rider who prefers the wet.

As is the case of most regional DH races the best run of two is taken. Damien performed well in his first run despite numerous mistakes due to washing out on the turns he finished second, 6sec behind Fabien who had a good smooth run. The second run did not go as well for Damien as he decided to calm his pace in the hope of eliminating the mistakes of his first run, unfortunately this did not work out and he ended up a sec slower which cost him 2 places. Fabien was able to replicate his first run almost identically showing that he really is within his current capacity and is taking every precaution to recover 100%.

After the race Fabien was really pleased with his performance and especially with his progress over the past week. The team will now travel to the 1st French Cup in Lac Blanc and then to the 4th world cup in Fort William, the next 2 races will be critical steps for Fabien deciding if he will continue the season or undertake knee surgery.

Barel est de retour !

Bonne nouvelle pour le SUBARU MTB pro team : Fabien Barel est de retour sur scène et revient directement en haut du podium.

Le week-end dernier, le team s’est rendu chez son partenaire Roubion pour sa DH Régionale. Damien Spagnolo est revenu quelques jours dans le sud de la France pour passer un peu de temps sur le vélo dans un environnement “sans pression”  et pour rouler avec son team leader Fabien qui faisait son retour en selle après sa blessure sud–africaine.

Les pilotes furent recompensés par une météo parfaite,une super piste et un plateau de pratiquement 300 riders.
L’entrainement se passa sans problèmes meme si Fabien ne se sentait pas encore super-confortable pour descendre avec une genouillère articulée de 1,2 Kg en plus. Malgrès tout, il se sentait bien sur le vélo et se rendit enfin compte que son programme de récuperation et de reprise était réaliste.

Damien appréciait aussi la piste mais luttait un peu avec les conditions du terrain. Extrèmement sec, balisé de trous et des virages dans la poussière, le tracé promettait d’être un challenge pour un pilote qui préfère les terrains humides.

Comme dans la plupart des DH régionales, le meilleur des deux runs est pris en compte. Damien s’en tira bien sur son premier run malgrès des erreurs et finit second, 6 secondes derrière Fabien qui fit un bon run tout en souplesse. Le second run se passa moins bien pour Damien quand il décida de calmer le jeu pour éliminer les erreurs du premier, malheureusement, ça ne fonctionna pas comme il l’espérait et il perdit 1 seconde, ce qui lui coutât deux places. Fabien fût capable de reproduire le même run, prouvant ainsi qu’il avait retrouvé ses capacities et qu’il prennait toutes les precautions pour revenir à 100%.

Après la course, Fabien était vraiment content de sa performance, particulièrement pour les progrès enregistrés tout au long de la semaine dernière.
Le team va maintenant partir pour la première Coupe de France au Lac Blanc, puis pour la 4ème manche de coupe du monde à Fort William. Les deux prochaines courses seront décisives pour Fabien qui devra decider s’il poursuit la saison ou s’oriente vers la chirurgie pour son genoux.

Damien Spagnolo moves into the top 30 overall world cup ranking, Fabien Barel back on the Bike, And Florent Payet out for the season!

A good weekend for the SUBARU mountainbike Pro team saw the progression of Damien finishing 30th overall in the UCI world cup ranking due to consistent riding so far this year. The world cup pace has considerably increased for 2009 and the times are closer and closer every round, with only 2 seconds separating 15th and 40th place.

Damien had an overall good run but rode a little cautiously on the upper section of the track and then pushed a little too hard on one of the technical sections trying to catch up lost time, unfortunately this lead to a couple of mistakes loosing valuable seconds.
The race was very closely contested and on a constantly changing track, Damien had progressed well through the training but was unable to put it all together on the race run. Even though his finishing place was not what he hoped for, he managed to control his run and finish well inside the points showing he is riding well at this point of the season but not yet had the “perfect run” which will easily take him into the top 20.

The next few weeks will be important for Damien as he tries to increase his speed by pushing the limit of his riding a little past his current “safe pace”. This is a step that he is prepared for and now will have Fabien to help him pass it.

Fabien spent the weekend supporting Damien and was also able to get some time on his enduro bike, he was happy to have been able to get back on the bike and do some runs in the bike park, all went well his knee was feeling strong. Fabien’s next goal will be to prepare for the Fort William world cup. More news about fabien next week.

Another big news this weekend has been florent Payet pull out for the season. Racing is requiring Technical but also mental skills to perform. The riders are under pressure all year long to give the best of them self. As a big surprise for the all team, Florent decided to pull out racing. He precised to us that he was not capable to hold the pace of a full World cup season, and that he would need to refresh himself to come back stronger next year. The all team is very disappointed of the situation but wish him all the best in the new challenge that is facing him.

On the team side, we will find out during the week, if we will hire another rider for the rest of the season.

Damien Spagnolo atteint le TOP 30 du classement général mondial, Fabien Barel est de retour sur un vélo et Florent Payet abandonne la saison !

Un bon week-end pour la SUBARU MTB PRO TEAM avec l’ascension de Damien à la 30ème. place du classement UCI mondial, grâce à ses performances tout au long de l’année. Cette coupe du monde 2009 est de plus en plus exigeante et les temps de plus en plus serrés, avec seulement 2 secondes entre le 15ème. et le 40ème.

Damien fit un bon run dans l’ensemble mais fut trop prudent dans la partie supérieure de la piste et inversement trop rapide dans un des passages techniques, lui faisant perdre de précieuses secondes.
La compétition battait son plein. Damien fit de gros progrès tout au long des entrainements, mais fut incapable de tout appliquer le jour de la course. Et même si sa place d’arrivée n’était pas ce qu’il espérait, il contrôla son run et finit dans les rangs, montrant qu’il roulait bien à ce stade de la saison. Mais pas encore suffisamment pour atteindre le TOP 20.

Les prochaines semaines seront très importantes pour Damien, voulant augmenter sa vitesse quitte à repousser ses limites. Il est prêt à passer le pas et Fabien sera là pour l’aider à franchir ce cap.
Fabien passa le week-end à supporter Damien et prit aussi le temps pour remonter sur son vélo d’enduro. Il fut heureux de pouvoir faire quelques runs dans le bike park, son genou paraissant solide. Son prochain objectif est de se préparer pour la prochaine épreuve de coupe du monde à Fort William. On en saura plus la semaine prochaine.

La grande surprise du week-end vient de Florent Payet qui a décidé de se retirer de la compétition. Nous savons tous que la pression dans le compétition de haut niveau est intense. La gestion mentale est aussi importante que la gestion technique sur le vélo. Au détriment de l’équipe, Florent a pris la décision impartiale d’arrêter sa saison 2009 pour se reconstruire. La grande aventure que représente le sport de haut est remplie de challenge et d’embûches. Chacun réagit à cela de manière différente et en aucun cas ne peut être jugé. C’est bien sûr une grande déception pour le team, mais nous souhaitons tous à Florent beaucoup de courage pour le nouveau challenge qui lui fait face.

Au niveau du team, nous allons décider dans la semaine si nous recrutons un nouveau pilote pour le reste de la saison.

A tough week-end for the Subaru Mountainbike pro team ended well with a solid performance from Damien Spagnolo.The Team was faced with a two rider shortage, Fabien was still suffering from his knee injury and Florent was unable to attend due to his educational commitments leaving only Damien to represent the team. Damien felt the pressure during Friday’s training and was not feeling very confident on the track but he managed to focus his attentions on improving his lines and riding skills to finish the day with a smile on his face. The track was new so it was continuously changing and it was difficult to know which lines would be the fastest come race day.

The rain came down on Friday night and soaked the track, however it dried really quickly and by the qualification round the mud tyres were off and the intermediates on. Damien had a clean run for the qualifying and good time finishing in 33rd place. He knew he would have to work hard to claw his way into the top 20 for this race.

Fabien Barel although still injured was there to support his team and offer some important advice to Damien, he also made use of knowledge of the sport by participating in the commentary for the race for freecaster and eurosport.

Sunday was hot and sunny for the morning’s training and Damien was feeling confident he could knock 3 or 4 seconds of his qualifying time, unfortunately for him and about 15 other riders, there was a short rain storm before his start. The rain came at the worst moment causing chaos under the start tent whilst mechanics rushed to change to wet tyres.  Damien decided to do the same but unfortunately the storm did not last long enough to warrant the use of spikes, after a good top section Damien had a few scary moments in the rocky parts of the track, this caused him to loose focus a little and make 2 big errors.
The times were exceptionally close and with only 5 seconds separating the podium from 40th place there was no room for mistakes.
Damien was very disappointed with his run finishing 42nd, however he was able to console himself that he had improved his time by 4 seconds from the qualifying with a much deteriorated track.

Next stop Andorra!

Un dur week-end pour la SUBARU MTB Pro team, se terminant par une bonne performance de la part de Damien SPAGNOLO.

La team devait faire face avec une pénurie de 2 riders. Fabien souffrait toujours de sa blessure au genou et Florent n’était pas disponible à cause de ses engagements éducatifs. Damien était donc le seul à représenter la team. La pression pesait sur ses épaules pendant la séance d’entrainement de Vendredi et il n’était pas très à l’aise sur cette piste. Il réussit à améliorer ses trajectoires et finit la journée avec le sourire. Mais la piste était toute fraîche et n’arrêtait pas d’évoluer. C’était difficile de savoir quelle trajectoire serait la meilleure le jour de la course.

La pluie tomba pendant la nuit de Vendredi et trempa la piste. Mais heureusement, elle sécha vraiment très vite et on pouvait déjà remettre les pneus intermédiaires au début des séances de qualification. Damien fit un run très propre et finit en 33ème place. Il devait encore bosser dur pour faire sa route jusqu’au TOP 20.

Fabien Barel était là pour supporter sa team malgré sa blessure et apporta à Damien quelques bons conseils. Il participa également aux commentaires sportifs pour freecaster et eurosport.
Le Dimanche matin était chaud et ensoleillé. Damien sentait qu’il pouvait prendre 3 ou 4 secondes sur son temps de qualification. Mais malheureusement pour lui et 15 autres riders, un petit orage éclata juste avant le départ. La pluie vint au plus mauvais moment et ce fut le chaos sous la tente de départ avec les mécanos qui s’affairaient à changer les pneus. Damien décida de changer les siens mais l’orage ne dura pas assez longtemps pour justifier ce type de pneus. Après un bon départ, Damien se fit quelques frayeurs dans les parties rocailleuses, perdit sa concentration et fit 2 belles erreurs. Les chronos était très serrés et seulement 5 secondes séparaient le prodium de la 40ème place. Pas de place pour les erreurs…
Damien était très déçu de finir en 42ème place mais il se consola en se disant qu’il avait amélioré son temps de 4 secondes par rapport aux qualifications sur une piste aussi défoncée.
