Some disappointing results for Fabien and Damien after an excellent weekend of riding. Both Fabien and Damien were riding really well during the training and qualification with the highlight of the weekend being 2nd place for Fabien in the qualification round.

The track was as steep and rough as ever, even the new sections soon became filled with gnarly brake bumps and roots. The track was wet and loose after weeks of rain soaking the mountain and the weather forecast was not set to change things much with rain predicted for most of the week. Both riders were excited to race the first world cup with the new “SUMMUM pro team” race bike from Mondraker, they decided to set the bikes up for stability opting for a slack head angle and long chainstay. The riders worked to pre-set the suspension to deliver good comfort and absorption of the huge holes.

The training went well and it was evident that Fabien and Damien were on the correct pace and feeling good for the qualifying round.
For Damien the qualifying run went well and he managed to have a safe run to the bottom finishing in 25th place and confident that he could go faster in the race.
Fabien also played it safe but felt he had a good speed so pushed a little harder in the lower sections to increase his pace and finish with a great time in 2nd place.

After 2 more days of training the track had dried substantially so the tyre choice was difficult, Sunday morning’s training was the last chance for the riders to fine-tune the settings and they decided to stay on mud tyres. Damien had a confident and relaxed start but after a few hundred meters into the run he washed out with the front on one of the dry parts of the track and went down! He was not injured so he got back on the bike and rode a clean fast run to the finish, he crossed the line with a good time despite the off in the woods and was happy that he had ridden well. This was the first time of the season where he was riding well enough to have come close to the elusive top 10 finish.

For Fabien the run did not go so well, after a good start he caught a rock with his rear disc which bent it severely and caused the rear brake to fail, so he was now left with only the front to slow him down, he managed for a few more turns but then went off track in one of the steep sections and went over the bars, as with his team-mate Damien he did not give up but instead tried to focus on braking earlier and continuing to the finish. He managed to keep up a fast pace to the line and ended up in 16th place – not bad with no rear brake and a crash!

Well, as this was the final both riders were happy to have given it their all and reassured with the knowledge that they were both riding really well. After the race both Damien and Fabien commented that the bike was working really well and allowing them to push the limits, so a big thanks to all the partners for a great season!

Despite missing the first 3 rounds of the world cup, Fabien made an amazing comeback to finish 10th overall in the world cup rankings. Damien was slightly off his goal of a top 20, finishing 27th overall.
Both riders were pleased with the outcome of the season despite the difficulties encountered and are more motivated than ever to train hard this winter and return to the top in 2010.

Résultats décevants pour Fabien et Damien après un excellent week-end de pilotage. Pendant l’entraînement et les qualifs, ils ont tous deux roulé vraiment bien avec un point fort de Fabien en seconde place au round de qualifications.
La piste était plus raide et rugueuse que jamais, même les sections nouvelles étaient rapidement devenues pleines de bosses, de nœuds et de racines. Elle était mouillée et en vrac après des semaines de pluie détrempant la montagne, et les prévisions météo n’annonçaient pas de changements majeurs avec de la pluie prévue pour la plupart de la semaine.

Les deux pilotes étaient exités de courir la première coupe du monde avec le nouveau « SUMMUM pro team » tous juste arrivé de chez Mondraker. Ils décident de configurer les vélos pour la stabilité optant pour un angle de chasse ouvert et des bases rallongées. Les pilotes travaillent ensuite à pré-régler les suspensions pour obtenir un confort optimum et une bonne absorption des énormes trous.

L’entraînement se passe bien et il devient évident que Fabien et Damien sont sur la bonne trace et sentent bien les qualifications.
Pour Damien, le run de qualif se déroule de manière satisfaisante et il fait en sorte de sécuriser son run jusqu’en bas, finissant en 25 ème place et confiant sur le fait qu’il pourra rouler plus vite sur la course.
Fabien aussi la joue « secure » mais sent qu’il a une bonne vitesse et pousse un peu plus sur la partie basse pour augmenter son rythme et finir avec un super temps en seconde position.

Après deux jours d’entraînement supplémentaires, la piste a pas mal séché et le choix des pneus s’avère délicat. L’entraînement de dimanche matin est la dernière chance pour les pilotes de peaufiner les réglages et ils décident de rester en pneus boue. Damien prend un départ confiant et détendu mais après quelques centaines de mètres dans le run, il dérape de l’avant dans une des parties sèches de la piste et tombe ! Il n’est pas blessé donc il remonte sur le vélo et fait une fin de run propre et rapide. Il passe la ligne avec un bon temps malgrès la chute dans les bois, satisfait d’avoir bien piloté. C’est la première fois de la saison qu’il a piloté d’une à se rapprocher du très fermé Top 10.

Pour Fabien, le run ne se passe pas si bien. Après un bon départ, il accroche un rocher avec son disque arrière ce qui le déséquilibre sévèrement et cause des dégâts au frein arrière. Il ne lui reste maintenant plus que l’avant pour se ralentir. Il gère sur quelques virages de plus mais fait une sortie de piste dans l’une des sections raides et part dans le décor. Comme son co-équipier Damien, il ne renonce pas mais essaie de se concentrer désormais sur des anticipations de freinage pour continuer jusqu’au bout !
Il maintient un rythme rapide jusqu’à l’arrivée et finit 16eme – pas mal pour un run sans frein arrière, avec une chute en prime…

Et puis, comme c’était la dernière manche, les deux pilotes sont contents d’avoir donné tout ce qu’ils pouvaient et rassurés par la conviction d’avoir tous deux très bien piloté. Après la course, Damien et Fabien confirment tous deux que le vélo se comporte vraiment bien et leur a permis de repousser leurs limites, donc, un grand merci à tous les partenaires pour cette superbe saison !

Malgrès le fait d’avoir manqué les 3 premiers rounds de la coupe du monde, Fabien a fait un magnifique retour pour finir 10ème au classement général. Damien est tout proche de son objectif de Top 20, se classant 27ème au général.

Les deux pilotes sont satisfaits de l’issue de la saison malgrès les difficultés rencontrée et sont plus motivés que jamais pour travailler fort cet hiver et revenir au sommet en 2010 !

Close racing brings a fourth place finish for Fabien. With less than a second separating the top four riders Fabien was pleased to be on the pace but disappointed to be the wrong side of the second.

After a long and intense preparation period Fabien arrived in Australia still suffering from his knee injury but ready to race. He decided to participate in a small regional race as he had done last year before the world cup. The track in Ourimbah was similar to that of the worlds so a good test for the bike and rider, the local riders were fast and Fabien pushed hard to win the first round. He decided not to do the second round to save his legs for the coming week and his time was subsequently beaten placing him second. After this positive result the team of 3: Fabien, coach and mechanic headed for Canberra.

Monday was track walking, there were a few minor changes to the track but it was still going to be all about precision and pedalling, so the bike choice was made. Fabien surprised everybody when he started the training with his single crown Fox 36 fitted to his downhill bike. The training went well all week and he showed that he was on the pace, he knew he had to ride the technical sections well and then push really hard on the flat pedalling to try and make the difference on the other riders.

The official timed run did not go well for Fabien as he crashed in the rock garden, luckily he was not injured and he realised that he would have to focus more than ever for his race run. Sunday morning practice went well and Fabien was prepared to what he had to for the win. He flew out of the gate hitting all his lines and slamming the best time through the first split which included most of the technical sections. He was feeling confident but made a couple of small errors during the middle flat part of the track which lost him just over a second, he made a powerful comeback on the bottom flat part of track and managed to pull back some of the lost time but unfortunately not enough to take first place. Fabien crossed the line with fastest time but he knew it would not be enough to stay in the hot seat to the end.
Local Favourite, Mick Hannah, knocked Fabien of the hot seat as he posted a time 0.15sec faster. Fabien saw his chance of victory disappear but he knew he had given his best and had no regrets as he saw his time slip to 4th fastest.

In this difficult time Fabien was able to see the positive side and realised that he had performed exceptionally to be able to produce an almost perfect run after missing half the season due to his injury and to be able to compete as and with the fastest in the world again.

Une quatrième place pour Fabien… Avec moins d’une seconde séparant les quatres premiers pilotes, Fabien a été satisfait d’être dans la course, mais bien-sûr, un peu déçu d’être du mauvais coté de la fameuse “seconde”…

Après une préparation longue et intense, Fabien est arrivé en Australie en souffrant toujours de sa blessure au genou mais prêt à en découdre. Il avait decidé, comme l’an dernier, de participer à une petite course régionale avant les Championnats du Monde. La piste, à Ourimbah, était similaire à celle des mondiaux, donc un bon test pour le vélo et le pilote. Les pilotes locaux étaient rapides et Fabien a du pas mal envoyer pour gagner le premier round. Il a decidé ensuite de ne pas faire le second, pour preserver ses jambes en vue de la semaine à venir et son temps s’est donc retrouvé pas mal penalisé, le plaçant en seconde position. Après ce bon résultat, le trio du team : Fabien, le coatch et le mécano sont partis pour Canberra…

Le lundi était consacré aux reconnaissances à pied, il y avait quelques petits changements sur la piste mais il était clair que tout allait se jouer sur la précision et le pédalage. Le choix du vélo fut décidé.
C’est ainsi que Fabien surprit tout le monde en démarrant les entraînements avec une fourche simple T Fox 36, adaptée sur son vélo de descente. Les séances d’entraînement se passèrent bien toute la semaine, il prouva qu’il était dans les clous… Il savait qu’il devait se concentrer sur les sections techniques puis envoyer vraiment sur les pédalages pour faire la différence.

Les qualifications ne se passent pas au mieux, fabien chute dans les rochers. Par chance il ne se blesse pas et il réalise qu’il devra se concentrer plus que jamais au moment de la course.
Les mise en route du dimanche matin se passent bien et Fabien se sent prêt à faire ce qu’il a à faire pour la victoire. Il s’envole des portes, passant toutes ses lignes et surfant sur le meilleur temps sur la première section qui comprend la plupart des sections vraiment techniques. Il se sent confiant mais enchaîne quelques erreurs minimes sur la partie médiane du trace qui lui font perdre à peine plus d’une seconde. Il fait ensuite un retour puissant sur la fin et s’efforce de reprendre du temps… mais malheureusement pas suffisamment pour prendre la première place.
Fabien passé la ligne avec le meilleurs temps mais il sait que ce ne sera pas suffisant pour rester en haut du podium jusqu’à la fin. Le favori local, Mick Hannah, ravie la première place avec 0,15 seconde de mieux. Fabien voit ses chances de victoire disparaitre, mais il sait qu’il a donné le meilleur et n’a pas de regrets quand il voit sa position passer en 4eme.

Dans ces moments difficiles, Fabien a été capable de voir le coté positif et réalise qu’il a tout de même fait une performance exceptionelle, en réalisant un run pratiquement parfait alors que sa blessure lui a fait manquer pratiquement la moitié de la saison. Il est toujours capable de rivaliser avec les plus grands mondiaux… à suivre.

Urge Bike opens a new way through the concept of environmentally friendly helmet production.
It was a promess since we decided to launch URGE bike products brand with South Shore Bicycles and it has been one of the sensations during Eurobike show.

We kept our promess by presenting the world’s first linen natural fiber helmet. Producing and keeping in mind that being eco friendly is one of our main goals.
We are proud to open a new way and to offer new perspectives in the world of MTB helmets. We want to be more eco friendly and we also want to take care of men and women who work to produce our helmets.
In the meantime, Fabien Barel rode this same helmet and took the 4th overall place at the World’s in Australia. He battled hard and finished near a new title.
This helmet is still a prototype but close to enter in production. We will release it soon.

Many of you came to the booth   and commented the different design of URGE helmets. Many of you are today impatient to ride it.

Urge Bike ouvre une nouvelle voie vers le casque éco responsable.
C’était une promesse depuis que nous avons décidé de lancer la marque URGE BIKE PRODUCTS au sein de South Shore Bicycle et ce fut la grosse surprise de l’Eurobike.
Pari et promesse tenus puisque nous avons présenté sur le stand le premier casque en fibre naturelle de Lin. Fabriquer en étant le plus éco-responsable est l’un de nos objectifs premiers.

Nous sommes fiers d’ouvrir une nouvelle voie et d’offrir de nouvelles perspectives dans le monde du casque VTT.
Nous voulons être plus respectueux de l’environnement et plus respectueux de la santé des hommes et des femmes qui fabriquent nos casques.
Au même moment, Fabien Barel utilisait ce même casque en Australie pour les championnats du monde de DH. Il s’est battu pour prendre la 4éme place, à trois fois rien d’une nouvelle consécration.
Ce casque est encore à l’état de proto, tout en étant proche de la pré série. Cela laisse augurer d’une commercialisation prochaine.

Vous êtes venus nombreux sur le stand pour saluer l’audace du style URGE  et vous êtes maintenant impatient de porter nos beaux casques.
Sachez que l’ensemble de la gamme 2010 sera disponible dans la plupart des shops d’Europe avant la fin de l’année.

Last round of the French Cup in Val D’isère.
Fabien BAREL finalizing his Worlds preparation on the top of the podium and Damien SPAGNOLO is completing it on a 3rd place with an unreal run in the dust.

The first great news of the weekend is the reception of the last version of the new Mondraker summum. From the design, to the tubing via the zero suspension system, the frame is just perfect!
It is in really dry conditions that the Subaru mtb pro team started the training on Friday. The track is very steep with a lots of unstable rocks. We all know that anticipation will be needed for the race run.

Damien is showing a strong consistency on his riding. Taking a 3rd place in the weekend, he well controlled his race run by being on the of the game with world cup riders. A big satisfaction for him that shows that efforts always pay off.

On Fabien’s side, it was an important race that would finalized his world’s preparation. He took the 1st  place 2.8 seconds on the front of Mickael Pascal who is really skillfull in those conditions.

A big well done to Damien who take the 3rd place overall of the French cup, Fabien BAREL second and Mickael Pascal on the top of the game with a strong consistency throught the season on the French cup.

Next stop, will be Canberra, Australia, For Fabien and Paul. World championship 2009…
It is now that we will combine mental, mechanical, and physical preparation with Passion of our sport!

Dernier round de la Coupe de France, à Val d’Isère.
Fabien BAREL termine ses préparatifs mondiaux sur la première marched u podium et Damien SPAGNOLO le complete sur la 3ème. marche avec un run dans la poussière fantastique.
La première grande nouvelle du week end est la reception de la dernière version du nouveau Mondraker Summum. Du design aux tubes, en passant par le système de suspension zero, le cadre est tout simplement parfait !
C’est dans des conditions vraiment sèches que le Subaru MTB Pro Team commence l’entraînement vendredi. Le circuit très raide est parsemé de pierres et rochers instables. Nous savons tous que le run devra être anticipé.

Damien fait prevue d’une grande cohérence dans son pilotage. Prenant la 3ème. place du week end, il contrôle son run en entrant dans la danse avec les pilotes de la coupe du monde. Une très grande satisfaction qui montre que les efforts payent toujours.

Du côté de Fabien, c’est une course importante car elle finalise ses préparatifs mondiaux. Il prend la 1ère. place à 2,8 secondes devant Mickael Pascal pourtant très competent dans ce genre de conditions.

Du bon boulot pour Damien qui prend la 3ème. place de la Coupe de France, Fabien BAREL second et Mickael Pascal en haut du podium avec une bonne consistence au travers de la saison de la Coupe de France.

Prochain arrêt, Canberra en Australie, pour Fabien et Paul. Les Championnats du Monde 2009…
Ce sera le moment où nous combinerons mental, mécanique et preparation physique au nom de la passion de notre sport !

At Urge bike, people don’t really have the same vision than everybody else.

Our helmets do have a different design and a real commitment in our convictions. We are different and we like it. So, this year, we decided to make something different on our booth.

We  will not tell you that we will create an Eco Friendly booth, because even if we succeeded in making it, the amount of Kilowatts and the Kilometers of carpet used during the shows of the new season would reduce our efforts down to 0. We simply decided to welcome an artist on our booth. He will create a series of paintings (155Cm x 67 Cm format) that will be part of a global artwork. This artwork will focus on urge bike and Fabien Barel. It will constitute the walls of our booth. A part of the paintings will be created “Live” during the show. It will be an artistic performance on our booth.

These paintings (9 pieces overall) will be sold to the public, for the shops, for our distributors, and for any people who will like it. The sale will take place on the booth. each piece will be sold at the special price of 290 euros. We will give the artworks to their owners on saturday evening. The artworks that will not find a buyer will be sold on the www.urgenepal.com website. All the benefits will go to an association allowing Nepalese children to practice Mountain bike.
Snowboard , Surf or Skateboard worlds already understood the interest to link different forms of art to their own lifestyle. MTB also deserves this type of expression,  because we do also have a particular lifestyle, focused on environment, effort and movement.

Chez Urge bike, on n’a pas vraiment la même vision que tout le monde.

Nos casques affichent un design marqué et un engagement dans nos convictions. Nous sommes différents  et ça nous plait. Alors cette année, nous avons décidé de faire aussi un truc un peu à part sur notre stand.

On ne va pas vous faire croire qu’on va faire un stand écolo biodégradable en macramé, car même si on y arrivait, la débauche de kilowatts et les kilomêtres de moquette jetés lors des salons de la rentrée réduiraient tous nos efforts à 0. Nous avons simplement décidé d’accueillir sur notre stand un artiste qui va peindre une série de toiles (format 155 x 67cm) formant au final une grande fresque. Cette fresque portera sur le thême de Urge bike et Fabien Barel et constituera les “murs” de notre stand. Une partie des toiles sera terminée en “live” durant le salon et fera une animation “performance” sur notre stand.

Ces tableaux (en tout 9 toiles) seront mis en vente au public, pour les magasins, pour nos distributeurs et pour tous les amateurs. la vente aura lieu sur le stand, au tarif préférentiel de 290 euros . Les toiles seront emportées par leurs acquéreurs le samedi soir. Les toiles invendues seront proposées aux enchères sur le site www.urgenepal.com . Les bénéfices dégagés par cette seront reversés à une association qui permet aux jeunes Népalais de pratiquer le VTT.
Le monde du snowboard, du surf, du skateboard a déjà compris l’intérêt d’associer différentes formes d’Art au “life style” que ces pratiques impliquent. Le Mountain bike mérite aussi ce type d’expression, car nous avons aussi un style de vie particulier, en phase avec l’environnement et avec la beauté de l’effort et du geste.

N’hésitez pas à venir nous rencontrer sur le stand South Shore Bicycles / Urge bike / Brake Authority Des beaux casques et un peu d’Art dans un monde de brutes n’ont jamais fait de mal à personne ; )…
