The 2008 world cup season ends well for the SUBARU MTB pro team despite of the final round results.

Once more the conditions changed from dry and sunny to wet and cold, the steep and technical track became a real challenge for the riders riders.
Friday night’s sky was illuminated by lightning as the storm lashed the mountain and washed away the hopes of a dry final.

Fabien, Damien and Florent were enjoying the training and posted good times in the timed training session however the change in conditions were not what the riders had hoped for and this made the semi-final very difficult. It went ok for the team although they were a little off the pace because of some riding errors, these errors cost them dearly due to the high level of riding shown by the times.

Florent was the first of the team down for the final and he knew that he had to do well if he wanted to stay in the top 20 overall world cup ranking, unfortunately this pressure got the better of him and he crashed. He had a good split time but was not able to hold the pace all the way to the finish.

Damien was also keen to pull out a good result as he needed to catch up points after missing the Australian round of the world cup, he set off with a good pace and had an awesome split time, putting him in the top 10, however he also could not manage to hold the pace and lost time due to errors in the bottom section ending in 29th place.

The pressure was really on Fabien for the final as he knew he could easily loose his 5th place overall if he did not have a good result. The run did not start well for Fabien as he made a big error in one of the technical sections that lost him time, he knew at that point that the win was not going to be possible however he also knew he had to score maximum points so he managed to re-focus and ride the technical woods sections really well, despite this he had a good split time but as with his team-mates, he battled on the bottom section of the track and could not pull back the lost time. He finished in 7th place.

As this was the final round the points calculations were done and Fabien was disappointed to see that he had been knocked into 6th place overall. This was due to the amazing ride by Sam Blinkensop who took max points for the event by winning semi and final rounds. Even though Fabien’s result did not show it, he was pleased that he had ridden consistently all year and progressed his skill level.

For the team it has been a successful first season together and this can be seen by the amazing result of 3rd place in the overall UCI team ranking.
Individually: for Fabien this has been his most consistent season despite loosing out on 2 results due to punctures, he finished the season as the No.5 UCI ranked rider; For Florent he reached his goal of top 10 by becoming the No.10 UCI rider; Damien had his highest ever world cup finish of 12th and overall 20th UCI ranked rider.

La coupe du monde de DH 2008 s’achève pour la SUBARU MTB Pro Team dans la satisfaction malgré une finale déconcertante.

Une fois de plus, les conditions climatiques instables étaient au rendez-vous, oscillant du chaud et ensoleillé au froid et pluvieux. La piste devint un vrai challenge technique pour les pilotes.

Fabien, Damien et Florent firent de bons résultats lors des entraînements. Mais ils n’avaient pas prévu que le temps changerait aussi radicalement, rendant la demi-finale très difficile. Malgré tout, ils firent une belle descente, commettant quelques erreurs de pilotage qui leur coûtèrent de précieuses secondes, d’autant plus que le niveau était très élevé.

Florent était le premier à prendre le départ de la finale. Il savait qu’il devait faire un bon résultat pour rester dans le TOP 20 mondial. Malheureusement, la pression prit le dessus et il chuta.

Damien devait absolument faire un bon résultat pour prendre quelques points comme il n’avait pas participé à la manche d’Australie. Au milieu de la course, il était remonté dans le TOP 10 mais il ne pouvait plus maintenir l’allure et fit quelques erreurs. Il finit en 29ième place.

La pression était également sur les épaules de Fabien, sachant pertinemment qu’il pouvait à tout moment perdre sa 5ème place. Il fit une grosse erreur dès le début de la course dans une section technique qui le fit perdre beaucoup de temps. Il savait à ce moment que la victoire venait de lui échapper des mains. Malgré tout, il se reprit et réussit un très beau passage technique dans les bois. Mais comme ses co-équipiers, il ne réussit pas à rattraper son retard sur la dernière section et finit 7ième.

La dernière manche de la coupe étant finie, les points furent calculés. Fabien était étonné d’être rétrogradé à la 6ième place au général. En effet, Sam  Blinkensop avait fait un incroyable run, remportant la demi-finale et la finale, prenant un max de points au passage et finit 5ième au classement général. Fabien était quand même satisfait de sa saison et de ses progrès.

Ce fut donc une très bonne première saison pour le team, finissant 3ième au classement UCI des équipes. Ce fut la saison la plus régulière pour Fabien, malgré ses 2 abandons pour crevaison, finissant No 5 au classement UCI, Florent atteignant son objectif en finissant No 10 et Damien finissant No 20.

Fabien Barel takes 4th place in the Australian world cup for the SUBARU mountain bike pro team.

After a cold but sunny week of training the clouds rolled in on Saturday evening and the rain began to fall turning the dust to sticky, slippery mud. Race day was going to be a big challenge for all the riders.
The weeks training had gone really well for Fabien and he was riding fast on the short but technical track filled with jumps and a long flat pedalling section to the finish.

The change in weather was not what Fabien enjoyed, it was as if all the weeks training had been wasted due to the dramatic change in the weather conditions. Fabien knew he would really have to work hard to have a clean run with few mistakes and a strong pedalling effort to have a chance at the podium.

The start of the men’s semi-final was in the middle of strong winds and more rain, Fabien took the start and made a small mistake at the top putting him off line and losing some time, he managed to control his aggression and ride smoothly to the finish in 4th place. The times were very close due to the short track and long pedalling section.

For the final, things worsened and the pedalling section became even more difficult as the mud became stickier and the winds strengthened. The race winner was going to be the fittest man on the day, for Fabien he knew it was going to be difficult as he has been lacking strength this season due to his early season injuries. He pushed as hard as he could and passed the technical sections with no mistakes.
Fabien finished 4th and was happy with his achievement especially his ability to adapt himself to the changing conditions.

Whilst Fabien was battling with the Kangaroo’s in Australia, Christian Tabart (SUBARU MTB pro Team Mechanic) was battling the clock in the Masters world championships in France where he placed 4th.

Fabien Barel a pris la 4ème. place à la Coupe du monde DH en Australie, pour le Subaru MTB Pro Team.

Après une semaine d’entraînement froide mais ensoleillée, les nuages se massèrent dans la soirée de samedi et la pluie commença à tomber, transformant la poussière en une boue poisseuse et glissante. La course allait être un véritable challenge pour tous les riders.
La semaine d’entraînement ayant bien servi à Fabien, il pilota à grande vitesse sur un circuit court mais technique rempli de sauts et d’une longue section de pédalage menant à l’arrivée.

Le changement météorologique n’amusa pas Fabien, c’était comme si toutes les semaines d’entraînement furent gaspillées. Fabien sut qu’il devrait travailler durement pour avoir une course propre avec quelques fautes et un gros effort de pédalage pour obtenir une chance de monter sur le podium.

Le départ de la demi-finale homme eut lieu lors de vents violents et beaucoup de pluie. Fabien prit le départ et fit une petite faute au sommet qui le fit sortir du circuit et perdre un peu de temps, il entreprit alors de contrôler son agressivité et pilota avec douceur jusqu’à la 4ème. place. Les temps furent très proches, comme le circuit était court et qu’il y avait une longue section de pédalage.

Pour la finale, les choses empirèrent et la section de pédalage devint bien plus difficile, vu que la boue fut plus poisseuse et les vents plus violents. Le vainqueur serait le pilote le plus en forme de la journée, pour Fabien il sut que ce serait difficile pour lui car il manquait de force cette saison, à cause de ses blessures récentes. Il fit du mieux qu’il pu et passa les sections techniques sans fautes.
Fabien finit 4ème. et il fut content du résultat et spécialement de son habileté à s’adapter lors des changements météorologiques.

Pendant que Fabien se battait avec les kangourous en Australie, Christian Tabart (Subaru MTB Pro Team Mechanic) se battait, lui, contre la montre aux Championnats du monde Masters en France où il se plaça 4ème.

Two days of flying, one day of recovery and another Victory for Fabien Barel.

After a long flight to Australia Fabien wanted to stretch his legs and ride his downhill bike, so he headed for a local race just outside Sydney. He was surprised to see fellow Frenchman, Fabien Pedamanaud also there for some riding.

The Central Coast Ourimbah Mountain Bike Club (CCOMTB) welcomed Fabien to the race and with the help of some of local riders he quickly learned the track and picked up speed. The track was pretty flat but with some good fast technical sections and intense accelerations made a good race track.

The first run was a little difficult for Fabien as he was not in race mode and the track which had no tape was a little difficult to follow in places, however he managed to finish a second behind first place track local and track record holder.

For the second run Fabien decided to focus a little more and push harder on the technical sections, he managed a clean run and picked up his speed to better his time by 4 seconds breaking the track record and putting into first place.

This was a great pre-world cup race as it was on similar terrain so Fabien was really happy with his result and is now looking forward to next weekends race.

2 jours d’avion, un jour de reconnaissance et une nouvelle victoire pour Fabien Barel.

Après un long vol vers l’Australie, Fabien voulut détendre ses jambes et monter sur son vélo. Il decida donc de participer à une course local près de Sydney. Il fut surpris de rencontrer un autre français, Fabien Pedamanaud, également là pour participer à la course.

La “Central Coast Ourimbah Mountain Bike Club” (CCOMTB) accueillit Fabien pour la course et avec l’aide de quelques riders locaux, il analysa rapidement la piste et gagna en vitesse. La piste était assez plate mais avec quelques bons passages techniques et des accélérations intenses.

Le premier run fut assez difficile pour Fabien comme il n’était pas dans un état d’esprit de compétition et que la piste était difficile à suivre comme elle n’avait pas de banderoles de délimitation. Il réussit pourtant à décrocher une deuxième place, juste derrière le détenteur du record de la piste.

Pour le second run, Fabien décida de se focaliser un peu plus et d’aller plus vite dans les sections techniques. Il fit un run propre et réussit à grignoter 4 secondes sur sa précédente performance. Il remporta ainsi la course et pulvérisa le record de la piste.

Ce fut donc un bon entrainement avec des conditions similaires auquelles il sera confronté lors de la futur course de coupe du monde. Fabien était très content de son résultat et se focalise maintenant sur la prochaine course.

Whilst Fabien was fighting for victory in Australia, Damien Spagnolo and Florent Payet were doing the same at home in France.

A dry weekend and short track made a change for the team after so many wet races this season they were happy to ride a dry track.

Training went well and they felt good for the race, unfortunately for Damien things did not go as well as he hoped, he had a crash in the top part of the track and lost a few seconds putting him down into 6th place.

For Florent it was a much better result than the previous race in Oz en Oisans, he found again his focus and managed a good run, with the times being very close he was disappointed to finish in 3rd place but was happy to have ridden consistently to pull out a good result.

Pendant que Fabien luttait pour la victoire en Australie, Damien Spagnolo et Florent Payet faisaient de même en France.

Avec un week-end sec et une piste courte, la team fut très heureuse de retrouver des conditions favorables, après la saison très humide qu’elle vient de traverser.

L’entrainement se passa bien et ils étaient confiants. Malheureusement, les choses se corsèrent pour Damien lors de la course. Il chuta en début de course ce qui le fit perdre de précieuses secondes. Il finit tout de même 6ième.

Pour Florent, il fut un bien meilleur résultat que lors de la précedante course à Oz en Oisans. Il retrouva sa concentration et géra bien sa course. Il fut pourtant déçu de ne finir que 3ième mais également content de son amélioration.

Fabien Barel takes the win of the second round of the French national series by a large margin over Michael Pascal.

The SUBARU Pro MTB team raced the second round of the French cup last weekend, Fabien Barel, Florent Payet and Damien Spagnolo were faced with yet another rain soaked track when they arrived for Friday’s course inspection. The storm continued all day Friday and the afternoon training had to be cancelled due to the extreme conditions.

Saturday brought some sunshine and the opportunity for the riders to practice the track, it was long and technical so a good rhythm without too much aggression would be important. The track dried up during the day, this made the rock slab sections very slick as the mud stuck to them. By the end of the training the riders were feeling confident and they all had a good pace.

Race-Day saw similar conditions, with sun in the morning and a mid-day storm, however it had rained on Saturday night so the first run of the day was very difficult.
The riders prepared well for the first run and despite of the changing conditions were confident.

Damien has some bad luck as he hit his pedal on one of the rocky sections which sent him over the bars, bending them in the process. For Florent it was not a perfect run either as he found himself a little off the pace in 5th place.
Fabien rode really well and finished in first place, 4 seconds up on 2nd place.

For the final the rain stayed away and the track became faster, the riders knew they would have to push harder and take more risk if they wanted to finish on the podium.
For Damien, it was not his weekend as during his run he hit one of the ski poles which locked his front brake and took him down, he lost a few seconds but was able to recover and have a good run finishing in 5th place.
Florent had some of the same bad luck, hitting his pedal hard as he left the start gate and bending the axle, he could not clip in and was not able to pedal due to his ankle hitting on the swing-arm with each revolution, however he focussed on carrying his speed and managed to battle the pain of his injured ankle to a 6th place finish.

Fabien was on form after 2 weeks of riding he had regained some of the skills he was lacking for the early part of the season. He was ready to push hard for a good result leading into the Australian world cup.
He did just that, rode aggressively and confidently to take the victory with a convincing margin.

Another good weekend for the team and an important confidence boost for Fabien, he departs for the 6th world cup in Australia on Thursday and Damien and Florent head for the 3rd French cup in Montgenevre next weekend.

Fabien Barel a largement remporté le deuxième round du championnat national devant Michael Pascal.

Encore une fois, le SUBARU MTB Pro Team a dû faire face à une piste détrempée lors de son repérage de vendredi. L’orage continua tout le vendredi et l’entraînement de l’après-midi fut annulé à cause des conditions extrêmes.

Le soleil revint le samedi ce qui permit aux riders de s’entraîner. La piste, longue et technique, devra être négociée sans trop d’agressivité. La piste sécha ce qui rendit les rochers très lisses à cause de la boue collée dessus. A la fin de la journée, les coureurs étaient très confiants.

Le jour de la course, les conditions étaient assez similaires avec du soleil le matin et de l’orage l’après-midi. Mais avec la pluie de la nuit, les premiers départs allaient être très difficiles. Malgré toutes ces conditions, les riders étaient prêts à en découdre.

Damien fut malchanceux lorsqu’il percuta un rocher avec sa pédale ce qui le projeta par-dessus le cintre, le tordant au passage. Florent ne fit pas un run parfait, bien qu’il finit en 5ième place.
Fabien fit une très belle descente en finissant en première place, à 4 secondes du deuxième.

La pluie cessa pour la finale ce qui rendit la piste plus rapide, les riders savaient qu’ils devraient tout donner et prendre tous les risques pour finir sur le podium. Ce n’était pas la semaine de Damien puisqu’il heurta une porte, son frein avant se bloqua, il chuta, et perdit quelques secondes qu’il réussit finalement à rattraper pour finir son run en 5ème place.
Florent manqua lui aussi de chance, puisqu’il frappa violament sa pédale dès le départ et tordit l’axe. Malgré l’impossibilité de clipser sa chaussure et de pédaler correctement, il se concentra sur sa vitesse et décida d’aller au delà de ce désarroi pour finir finalement à la 6ème place.

Fabien était en forme après 2 semaines de course et il retrouva le niveau qui lui manquait pour le début de la saison. Il était prêt à travailler dur pour obtenir un bon résultat qui le mènerait à la Coupe du monde australienne.
Il s’est donc donné à fond, pilotant avec agressivité et confiance et assura sa victoire avec une avance certaine.

Un autre bon week-end pour l’équipe et un important élan de confiance pour Fabien qui part pour la 6ème Coupe du monde en Australie jeudi. Damien et Florent, quant à eux, prennent le départ pour la 3ème Coupe de France à Montgenèvre le week-end prochain.

Damien Spagnolo marked his best ever world cup result last weekend for the Subaru Mountian Bike Pro Team.

The team travelled straight from Mt St Anne to Bromont on Monday with the intention of spending some time riding and resting in preparation for the race.
Walking the track was on Wednesday and as was the case the week before it was very wet. The track looked challenging and the riders were keen to get some early practice to build confidence before it deteriorated.

Practice went well for the team but the weather conditions were extreme! A major storm delayed the training and caused the closure of a large drop at the top of the track, fortunately all the rain did not dampen the spirits of the riders as they enjoyed riding the track.

Due to the rocky nature of the course Fabien, Florent and Damien decided to use dry tyres, so only some suspension modifications were needed to get the bikes ready for race day.

The qualifying went really well for Fabien, he decided to push hard and take risks hoping to score good points. He managed 3rd place but was not happy with his run as he made some big mistakes that lost him a few seconds, he knew he could do better in the final. Damien had an average run also making some mistakes and qualified mid-pack knowing he would have to focus if he was to pull off a good final. For Florent, luck was not on his side and he had a crash that put him way down in the results, however he did qualify for the final.

The final was much better for Florent as he managed to have a clean safe run, however he lacked confidence and decided to ride safe, he also had to contend with a brief rain storm which made the track very slippery. He was not too disappointed with his result as he had not found form on the track and did not want to push beyond his limits, so he was happy to have controlled his race run.
Damien was very confident and focused at the start and seemed like he had passed a big step in his preparation that allowed him to control his aggression and ride a smooth fast final, he crossed the line with a great time and took the hot seat. This was the first time in his career where he enjoyed the feeling of being one of the fastest racers in the world.
Fabien Barel was 3rd last rider down and the he knew he could have a good result, he was riding well, feeling strong and above all regaining confidence after a difficult season plagued with injury. He took a powerful start and was flying down the first section of the track, he landed the first big drop and felt his back tyre wash out, he knew it was not just loss of grip but something much worse, a rear puncture! Fabien was devastated as he realised that he had missed the opportunity for a great result. Although he did not cross the line with a good time he was happy with his riding throughout the weekend and feels he is now back on pace.

More good news is that the the team moves up to 2nd place in the overall ranking!

Leaving North America, the entire team was happy to have had the opportunity to spend 10 days together building the spirit and enjoying all aspects of the sport and lifestyle, back to France for French cups 2 and 3 and then Australia…..

Damien Spagnolo réalise son meilleur résultat de Coupe du monde ce week end pour le Subaru MTB Pro Team.

La team a voyagé de Mt. St. Anne à Bromont lundi avec l’intention de passer du temps à rider et à se préparer pour la course.
Mercredi, ils parcoururent le circuit et, comme ce fut le cas la semaine d’avant, il était très humide. Il semblait être un challenge et les pilotes étaient chauds pour commencer l’entraînement tôt afin de gagner de l’assurance avant que celui-ci ne soit détérioré.

Les exercices se déroulèrent bien pour la team mais les conditions météorologiques furent extrêmes ! Un violent orage retarda l’entraînement et causa la fermeture d’un large drop en haut du circuit.

Dû à la nature rocailleuse du terrain, Fabien, Florent et Damien décidèrent d’utiliser des pneus secs, ainsi seulement quelques modifications sur la suspension ont été faites pour que les vélos soient prêts.

Les qualifications se sont bien déroulées pour Fabien, il décida de mettre le paquet et prit quelques risques espérant marquer de bons points. Il finit à la 3ème. place mais ne fut pas content de ce circuit car il fit quelques grosses fautes qui lui causèrent la perte de quelques secondes, il savait qu’il pouvait faire mieux. Damien fit une course moyenne, faisant aussi quelques fautes et se qualifia vers le milieu des places, sachant qu’il devrait se concentrer s’il espérait un bon résultat final. Pour Florent, la chance ne fut pas de son côté, il eut un accident qui le fit perdre beaucoup de places mais cependant il se qualifia pour la finale.

La finale se déroula beaucoup mieux pour Florent qu’il opta pour une conduite propre, cependant par manque de confiance, il décide de piloter avec sécurité et il eut aussi à affronter un petit orage qui rendit le circuit très glissant. Il ne fut pas déçu de ses résultats vu qu’il n’était pas trop en forme et qu’il avait décidé de ne pas aller au delà de ses limites, donc il fut content d’avoir maîtrisé ce circuit.
Damien fut très confiant et se concentra sur la grille de départ. Il semblait avoir sauté un grand pas dans la préparation qui l’autorisa à contrôler son agressivité et à piloter une finale régulière et rapide, il passa l’arrivée avec un très bon temps et prit la meilleure place. Ce fut la première fois dans sa carrière où il sentit la joie d’être l’un des plus rapides pilotes dans le monde.
Fabien Barel fut le 3ème. des derniers pilotes à se lancer et il sut qu’il obtiendrait de bons résultats, il pilota bien, se sentant au point et fort, regagnant toute la confiance après une saison difficile assailli de blessures. Il prit un départ fulgurant et s’envola dans la première section, atterrit après le premier grand drop et sentit son pneu arrière s’affaisser, il sut que ce ne fut pas une simple perte d’adhérence mais quelque chose de beaucoup plus grave, une crevaison arrière !
Fabien fut anéanti et il réalise qu’il manqua l’opportunité de réaliser de très bons résultats. Bien qu’il ne traversa pas la ligne d’arrivée avec un bon temps, il fut content de courir tout le week-end et sut qu’il était à présent de retour avec allure.

Plus de bonnes nouvelles : le team monta à la 2nd. place dans le classement générale !

Quittant l’Amérique du Nord, l’équipe entière fut heureuse d’avoir eu l’opportunité de construire un esprit durant ces 10 jours ensemble et goûta à tous les aspects du sport et de la vie. De retour en France pour les Coupes de France 2 et 3 puis ensuite l’Australie…
